What winter? Brits hit the water as temperatures soar to 15C on one of the warmest New Year's Days on record

The New Year's Day record dates back almost a century to 1916, when Bude in Cornwall saw 15.6C (60F), while the 15C (59F) recorded in 1988 is in second place. But the Met Office has issued a yellow 'be aware' severe weather warning for wind today in north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland. And the Environment Agency has two flood alerts out - for the coast at Bridlington, East Yorkshire, and the area around Grantham, Lincolnshire.
