52 Die In Mexico Prison Riot, As Families Rush Out To See If Relatives Are Alive

A battle between rival groups at a prison near Monterrey in northern Mexico has left 52 inmates dead. Nuevo Leon state Governor Jaime Rodriguez said 12 other people were injured in Topo Chico jail after prisoners fought with "sharp weapons, bats and sticks".
A fire was also started in a storage room. Officials say the situation is under control and no inmates escaped.
Crowds of relatives outside the jail blocked roads, demanding information. Some threw sticks and rocks and tried to pull the prison gate open as riot police blocked their way. The incident comes just days before Pope Francis is due to visit a prison in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez, an area notorious for violence between drugs cartels.

EFCC Declares Ex-Niger Delta Militant Leader, Tompolo Wanted

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in an advertorial signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, yesterday declared a former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo a.k,a Tompolo wanted following two bench warrants issued against him by a Federal High Court in Lagos, where he has been charged with a N45.9bn fraud.
In the said advertorial which appears with Tompolo’s photograph, the EFCC described him as a 47-year-old, dark-complexioned man from Okerenkoko, Gbaramotu Kingdom in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. His address was given as No. 1, Chief Agbanu Street, DDPA Extension, Warri, Delta State, and declares he speaks both Izon and English languages.

There Is Zika Virus In Nigeria- Minister Of Health

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said that the mosquitoes carrying Zika virus are in Nigeria and urged Nigerians to protect themselves by using mosquito nets because as it is, Zika has no cure and the best for now is prevention. He also asked Nigerians to remain calm, be vigilant and report any suspected case of an acute febrile illness in pregnant women, in particular, to any nearest health facility. He made this disclosure at a press briefing, yesterday, in Abuja, where he explained that the mosquitoes were active and flying, adding that they bite during the day and early morning. Possible Locations Of Chibok Girls Identified – Air Force

The Nigerian Air Force says it has been able to identify possible locations of the abducted Chibok girls.
The Director of Public Relations at the Nigerian Air Force, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, told Channels Television that the Air Force is abstaining from attacking the area to make sure that the girls are not hit.
He added that the latest aerial bombardment of Sambisa forest had been aimed at the logistics of the Boko Haram sect and not areas where the girls could be located.

Drama As 48-Year Old Woman Vomits & Excretes 80 Wraps Of Cocaine At Abuja Airport

A 48 year-old woman caused a mild drama at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after she allegedly vomited 15 wraps of white, powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine.
Saidat Hassan, a mother of three,‎ was arrested at the central screening section of the departure hall during the screening of passengers on an Egypt Airline flight to Jedda, Saudi Arabia, en-route Cairo.
She was immediately apprehended by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) who discovered that she had ingested 80 wraps of cocaine weighing 904 grammes, the agency said in a statement on Friday.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo has agreed with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), to immediately recall all suspended workers and stop everything about concession in the State.
The National President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, read the statement to the protesting workers shortly after the conclusion of their negotiation with the Imo State Government.
The statement was signed by A. N. Eluwa -Solicitor General of Imo, for the government, Chairman NLC in Imo, Austin Chilakpu, Chairman, TUC, Ezeji Ezeji and eight others for the NLC.

Yellow Fever Outbreak In Angola Kills 37, Infects 191

A yellow fever outbreak in Angola has killed 37 people since December with eight new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the country's national director of health Adelaide de Carvalho says.
The outbreak of yellow fever, which is transmitted by mosquito bites, began in the Luanda suburb of Viana but has spread to other areas of the southern African country with 191 people infected so far.
Symptoms of yellow fever include sudden fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. God help them.

Just a few days after the international day of action against female genital mutilation (FGM) Kenya's People Daily newspaper says it is an "open secret" that Kenyan-Somali parents, who have settled in the US and Europe, have been travelling back home with their daughters to have them undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The paper quotes a nurse in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighbourhood as saying that she undertakes the procedure in their homes and charges up to $100 (£67) for each operation.
A traditional circumciser also told the newspaper that she has in the past conducted FGM in London "where families invited her secretly" but later decided to insist they travel home to avoid being caught. 

Family, Friends Gather Outside Mine In SA Where 3 Miners Are Trapped (Photo)

Three South African miners have been trapped underground in a mine since Friday. They were working above ground when their metal container fell into a sinkhole and many of them escaped except for three.
Their families, friends and community members who are tired of waiting gathered outside Lily Gold Mine in Barberton yesterday evening till late night praying for their safe return.
Sadly rescue teams have remained "tight-lipped" about the status of the operation to save the men since yesterday morning. The management of the mine have also not given an update since about the same time.
Eyewitnesses say the three men who were previously heard knocking, had not been heard for 70 hours now.

Minister For Happiness ...United Arab Emirates Picks First Woman

A woman will lead the United Arab Emirates' attempt to secure happiness for its citizens after being named the country's first ever minister of state for happiness.
Ohood Al Roumi's appointment to the position was announced on Wednesday via Twitter by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the prime minister, ruler of Dubai and the vice president of the UAE.
"National happiness isn't a wish. Plans, projects, programmes, indices will inform the work of our ministries to achieve happiness," he wrote on his official Twitter page.
Al Roumi will also continue serving as the director-general of the prime minister's office, a position she currently holds.
Along with her roles in the UAE, the United Nations Foundation selected Al Roumi last year to be a member of its Global Entrepreneurship Council. She is the first Arab member of the body.

Leading Opposition Candidate In Uganda's Presidential Election Promises To Build A Museum In Idi Amin’s Honour

A leading opposition candidate in Uganda's presidential election has promised to repatriate the remains of the former dictator, Idi Amin, and build a museum in his honour.
Amama Mbabazi, the former prime minister, said he wanted to reconcile different factions in Uganda. Too often, they divided the country between Idi Amin's people, Milton Obote's people and Yoweri Museveni's people, he said.
Amin's eight-year rule from 1971 to 1979 was characterised by bloodshed and eccentricity. He killed opponents, often brutally, and expelled Uganda's Asian population, before being overthrown by Obote. He died in exile in Saudi Arabia in 2003.

Ibadan Murder: Foster Father Of Man Allegedly Killed By Wife Dies

The family of Lowo Oyediran-Ajanaku, who was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, Yewande, was on Monday thrown into fresh mourning as the foster father of the deceased, Oyewole Ajanaku, reportedly died of shock.
A Punch correspondent gathered that 89-year-old Ajanaku, who was the foster father of the France-based businessman developed some health issues on hearing that his nephew, Lowo, had been allegedly murdered by his wife.
The foster father was said to have died of complications related to high blood pressure on Monday at Gbongan, in the Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State.

The procedure is understood to be minor, with Messi able to return home on the same day and expected back in training on Wednesday.

Man Sets Himself On Fire Outside Kensington Palace

A man has died today after setting himself on fire outside Kensington Palace, the London home of Prince William and his wife Kate, police said. However, the incident is not being treated as suspicious or related to terrorism, they added.
Police said they had been alerted just after midnight by officials from a central London hospital to say a man in their care had failed to return.
Three hours later, officers were called to a site near the locked parks of the palace, located in Kensington Gardens in central London, after reports of a man acting suspiciously. When they arrived they found the man, in his 40s, ablaze. He was declared dead not long afterwards.

It is not known if Prince William and his family were at the palace at the time.

The Rivers State Police Command today, February 9, arrested four suspected criminals after a tip-off from a patriotic citizen who reported suspicious movement at Ibadan waterfront, Port Harcourt.
Quick response on the information by combined teams of police led the arrest of 4 suspects namely Francis Anderson 'm' 38, Gift David 'm',18, Richard Toria 'm', 23 and Barikwa Godspower 'f', 32. 
Exhibits recovered from them include five AK-47 rifles with breach numbers as follows(1) 1968 TK 811,(2) 1963 x 37620, (3) 56-2558631, (4) AD 34 4015 and (5) no number, six magazines and 120 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
Two Toyota camry vehicles with registration numbers MUS 583 DF, and SMK 577 BZ were also recovered from them. Investigation into the case is ongoing.

Shehu Of Bornu To Be Installed New Chancellor Of Unilag

Shehu of Borno, His Eminence Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi CFR, will on Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 be installed as Chancellor of the University of Lagos, a statement issued by the university over the weekend said.

Lamido Sanusi Criticises Buhari's Naira Policy

Respected former head of Nigeria's Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi has said the government should end its policy of trying to maintain the value of the currency, the naira. Mr Sanusi said the drawbacks of the policy "far outweigh its dubious benefits", the Financial Times reports.
President Muhammadu Buhari had told the BBC last week that he was not convinced of the need to "murder" the naira. 
However the falling oil price has put pressure on his currency policy. While the authorities are keeping the official naira rate at around 200 to the US dollar, the black market rate is closer to 300 and sometimes more than.

I Spend N240k Monthly On Hotel Bill – Burglar

A burglar arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, has disclosed that he pays N240, 000.00 monthly to service his hotel bills.
Joseph David, 20, from Ekpoma, Edo State, was arrested in Ikeja at about 4:40 a.m. after he had successfully burgled two flats in Gbajobi Street, Balogun, Ikeja, where he stole three laptops and five mobile phones.
David was on his way to the hotel (name withheld) located in Dopemu, where he has been lodging for over one month when he was intercepted by the police.

Ebonyi State Government Prosecute 136 Residents, Landlords For Open Defecation

Ebonyi State Government has prosecuted over 138 persons who were arrested for defecating in open places. Over 60 landlords in Abakaliki alone were also prosecuted for refusing to install toilet facilities in their houses.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ogodo Nome, disclosed this in Abakaliki. Nome attributed the spread of most diseases in the state to poor sanitary conditions by residents.

INEC Fixes February 20 For Plateau Rerun, Supplementary Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed February 20 for rerun and supplementary elections for Langtang South, Pankshin South and Plateau North state constituencies.
INEC in a statement in Jos on Sunday said that the Langtang South elections would be conducted in the entire 68 polling units, in compliance with a Court of Appeal judgment.
The court had ruled that the initial winner, Vincent Bulus of the PDP, was not qualified to have contested the April 11, 2015 polls.

“The elections will also feature two political parties, out of the three that participated in the initial elections – the APC and the MPPP; the PDP candidate has been excluded,” the statement said.

Obasanjo attacks Jonathan, PDP again, says Chibok girls may not return

Despite efforts and assurances by the Federal Government that it would rescue the abducted Chobok girls alive, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised doubts on their possible return.
Mr Obasanjo, who spoke at an event organized by the Staff Club of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Friday, said anyone saying the girls would return was simply telling lies.
The programme which was held at the open arena of the staff club, was themed, “An Evening with Obasanjo.”

Mr. Obasanjo blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan for trivializing the distress call to rescue the girls on the day they were captured.

Dasukigate: Ex-VP Sambo’s Aide Admits Receiving N25m For Election Website

A former special adviser on political matters to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, Abba Dabo, on Thursday told Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja that he was paid N25 million by the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, to create a website.
The money was part of the N400 million arms purchase funds allegedly given to Mr. Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited by the former NSA, Sambo Dasuki.
Mr. Dabo, while being led in evidence by the counsel to Economic Financial Crimes Commission, Sylvanus Tahir, told the court that he was paid the money through the second defendant’s company account, Destra Investment Limited.

Restoring Peace: Time For Police To Take Over North-East- Arase

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase has said the time has come for police officers to take over liberated areas in the North-East from the military as part of measures to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
Speaking at a roundtable meeting with strategic stakeholders on security in the North-East on Thursday in Abuja, Arase said with the increasing successes of the military, the time had come for the police to play its lead role in restoring civil authority in the war-torn areas.
He said, “I want to state that the unstable situation and wide range conflict created in the North-East has greatly denied citizens in the affected areas of the security which they constitutionally deserved to enjoy and it is for this reason that the Nigeria Police Force is evolving operational strategies that will lead to the restoration of police primacy and restoration of civil authority in the North-East. Of course, I will not just post Police personnel to the North-East without first ensuring their safety and provision of adequate welfare. That is why we have already sent the Deputy Inspector-General of Police,  Operations to go beforehand and ensure adequate preparations towards the taking over of the place by the Police,” he said.

APC National leader, Bola Tinubu has agreed to accept an unreserved apology from the Chairman of DAAR Communication PLC, Chief Raymond Dokepsi as settlement for the libellous documentary “Lion of Burdillion” aired on Africa Independent Television, AIT against him.
Both Tinubu and Dokpesi’s lawyers this morning presented the terms of settlement reached on 29 January, 2016 before the trial court Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe. The terms of agreement include among other things, a retraction of the broadcast by AIT, an apology by AIT, which should be aired daily for a quarter.The trial court subsequently adopted the terms of settlement.

Man Who Faked Cancer Got At Least $22K In Donations- Police

Police say a Connecticut man shaved his head and took weight loss pills to convince people he had stage 3 brain cancer and collected thousands in donations.
Tyler Tomer, of Wallingford, was charged Wednesday with first-degree larceny and first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community. Police say an investigation started in May after they received complaints that a man claiming to have cancer was collecting donations at benefits in his honor.
Police say there have been multiple benefits for the 29-year-old Tomer in Connecticut and Kansas. They say medical records determined he was never diagnosed with cancer. Tomer allegedly accepted at least $22,000.
He is being held on $250,000 bond and is due in court Feb. 17.

Buhari Begins Five Days’ Vacation, Osinbajo To Take Over

The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buahri today began a five-day vacation. According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President had already conveyed a letter to that effect to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara notifying them on his vacation.
The Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo will be performing the functions of the president till he returns, the statement also said.

Buhari is expected back in office on February 10th.
