Governor Muazu Aliyu of Niger State has hinted at further crisis looming
in the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP which lost the 2015 general
election to the All Progressives Congress,APC.Speaking in Dutse, Jigawa
State capital on Saturday,Governor Aliyu said the leadership of PDP
which ought to resign after losing an election has been threatening to
form a new faction if they are compelled to resign.“It is unfair that
they are threatening to form a factional PDP because they were asked to
resign” Aliyu said.
Recall that PDP national chairman, Mr Adamu Muazu and the National
Working Committee NWC members have come under heavy criticisms following
the loss of the presidential election by the party’s
candidate,President Goodluck Jonathan to General Muhammadu Buhari of
APC.
The crisis after election which has been dubbed PDP’s post -election
trauma has been so intense that even president Jonathan had to call the
warring parties to end the infighting. Senate President David Mark has
also openly said the infighting in the party was bad and PDP should not
see the loss as death sentence. Mark also said the party was on a path
to self –destruction if the post election crisis did not stop.
Any hope that the PDP has ended the trauma was blown away Saturday
when Governor Aliyu openly lamented the failure of the PDP leadership to
resign just as he hinted at the plan by Muazu and others to form a
parallel faction of PDP.
Aliyu , in a virtual endorsement of Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose’s
endorsement of the call on Muazu ,others to resign like the leaders of
British Labour and Lib-Dem parties, said “It is unfortunate that
people had to be called to resign. The leaders are supposed to
voluntarily resign their positions for the loss at the just concluded
general elections.”
Governor Aliyu made these remarks during the inauguration of a township
road which Jigawa state Governor Sule Lamido had named after ‘G7
Governors’ .
If Muzau and others proceed to form a new faction, it will be the
second time PDP will be going through factionalisation .Stakeholders led
by seven governors(G7) and former vice president Atiku Abubakar among
others formed the New PDP prior to the presidential primaries.Five of
the governors defected to APC,while Aliyu and Lamido stayed back in
PDP.
PDP’s fortunes have dwindled since the factional crisis.Whether the
party can withstand the emergence of a new faction as Governor Aliyu
alleged remains to be see.
