ISIS militants on Wednesday stormed and captured roughly one
third of a central Syrian city that is just few meters from the ancient ruins
of Palmyra.
Reports according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for
Human Rights says that ISIS fighters entered Tadmur, a modern city of thousands
of people, after days of fighting with Syrian government forces in the area .
U.N. and Syrian officials have expressed fears that if the historic Palmyra ruins fall under ISIS control, the group will destroy them, just as it bulldozed the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud and took statues in Mosul Museum.
