MEET The Gully GAY Queens of Jamaica Community
Jamaica is one of the world's most homophobic nations, where a colonial law against 'buggery' is still in force and can land offenders 10 years in jail. It means youths flee their families, becoming homeless and living in a mosquito-infested storm drain in the country's capital, Kingston - as revealed in a short documentary made by VICE News. The Gully Queens, as they call themselves, have sought refuge in the drains after being forced out from shacks, derelict buildings, and sometimes by their own families. Unwilling to hide their sexuality, the sense of community and relative safety the gully provides acts as a welcome sanctuary. Pictured (main), two storm drain inhabitants; inset, injuries caused by homophobic attack; and left, applying makeup in the mosquito-infested drain.
