The brother of Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos slotted home an 89th-minute penalty to round off a convincing win against a surprisingly sluggish Chelsea.
Chelsea started the first half poorly and gave away a penalty in the 20th minute when John Terry handled a cross from Clemens Fritz. Eljero Elia made no mistake from the spot as he rifled it into the bottom corner to put Bremen a goal up.
Bremen’s second came in the 37th minute when another Fritz cross was met by Ludovic Obraniak at the near post who glanced the ball into the opposite corner giving a sprawling Thibault Courtois no chance.
Jose Mourinho’s men couldn’t create any chances in the second half despite the return of Didier Drogba to their attack and were caught at the back when Nathan Ake gave away a late penalty.
Despite the result, Chelsea will be pleased to have got through another 90 minutes with no major injury scares as the countdown to the big Premier League kick-off draws ever nearer.
