Commonwealth Games: Ghana Athletes Get Paid, Nigerian Counterparts Continue To Wait

Ghanaian athletes to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have confirmed receiving the last tranche of their allowances, SaharaReporters Sports understands.
They had earlier threatened to go on an asylum-seeking mission, similar to some of their compatriots in Brazil during the FIFA World Cup, if officials failed to make full payment of their allowance of $3,500, following an initial payment of $2,400.
Responding swiftly, the National Sports Authority then paid the outstanding allowance of $1,000 to each athlete.
In contrast, members of the Nigerian contingent have only received promises from the National Sports Commission of full payment of their allowances when they return to Abuja.
At the Games, Team Nigeria posted one of its best outings in the history of its participation with 36 medals comprising 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals, to place eighth on the overall medals table.
Ghana's close to 70 athletes earned two bronze medals.
