Iran compares Saudi Arabia to ISIS in chilling cartoon as Supreme Leader vows 'divine revenge' for executing 47 prisoners including Shiite cleric

Iran's Supreme Leader vowed 'divined revenge' on Saudi Arabia after it executed 47 prisoners including Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, the most vocal critic of the Gulf nation. A controversial meme (left) posted on an Iranian website, thought to belong to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni, suggested the only difference between Saudi rulers and ISIS executioners were the clothes they wore. Saudi Arabia claimed al-Nimr and the other prisoners were all convicted terrorists and claimed Iran had shown its true face as a 'supporter of terrorists' by condemning his death.

The escalating war of words comes after a night of violence in Iran's capital, Tehran, where a furious mob petrol bombed the Saudi embassy (top right) in protest. Similar protests erupted across Middle East and Gulf countries, including Bahrain (bottom right), where demonstrator burned tyres in the middle of the street.
