Three strong earthquakes hit central Italy and could be felt in Rome,
where it shook centuries-old buildings in the Italian capital. It is not
known if it has caused significant casualties. Some buildings have
collapsed, a motorway has been closed and many people in the countryside
were plunged into darkness as the power was knocked out but there have
been no reports of casualties. Rescuers used candles and torches to
search in the village of Visso (pictured).
