Woman Gives Birth To Conjoined Twins At Syria War Zone

A mother has given birth to conjoined twins in a part of Syria that has seen some of the war’s heaviest fighting.

Nawras and Moaz, who are joined at the chest with protruding intestines, were born in the city of Douma in July. They have now been safely transferred by ambulance to a children’s hospital in nearby Damascus. The twins travelled with their mother and aunt and are said to be in good health.

Syrian doctors had appealed for help from the World Health Organization, saying the twins would die if they were unable to undergo surgery.

Okagbare Into Semi-Final At Olympics

Ace Nigerian runner, Blessing Okagbare is through to the 100m semi-finals at Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In Heat three on Friday, Okagbare finished 2nd, clocking 11.16s to take one of the two automatic qualification spots.

The Delta State born sprinter was placed on Lane 5 for the race and finished 2nd comfortably.

Breaking: Armed Man Stabs 6 And Sets Train On Fire In Switzerland

A man set a train carriage in Switzerland on fire using a flammable liquid and stabbed passengers on Saturday, injuring six people, including a six-year-old child, police said.

The man, a 27-year-old Swiss citizen, carried out the attack on a train travelling in Switzerland's far east, along its border with Liechtenstein, and was also injured, regional police in Saint Gallen said in a statement.

Police said the attack had taken place at around 2:20pm (1220 GMT) near the Salez station on a train running between Buchs and Sennwald and that some of the injuries were serious.

Andy Murray Heads Into Rio 2016 Olympic Final

Andy Murray will go for gold again in the Rio 2016 Olympic tennis final after ruthlessly dispatching Kei Nishikori in a one-sided semi-final.

The defending champion, who is now guaranteed his third Olympic medal, recovered from the edge against both Fabio Fognini and Steve Johnson in the last two rounds.

Murray was superb from start to finish and did not face a break point in a 6-1 6-4 victory. He will play either Rafael Nadal or Juan Martin Del Potro for the gold medal on Sunday.

11 Newborn Babies Killed In Baghdad Hospital Fire

A fire tore through the maternity ward of a Baghdad hospital this morning, killing 11 newborns and injuring at least 25 people, according to health officials in Iraq.

Dr. Ahmed al-Rudaini, a spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Health, said the 11 infants who died were being treated at a ward for premature babies at Yarmouk Hospital, in western Baghdad.

More than 25 people, babies and women, suffered burns or smoke inhalation and were evacuated to other hospitals. Several of the mothers were awaiting cesarean sections.

Officials said the episode, which happened shortly after midnight, began when an oxygen bottle exploded in a corridor, setting off an electrical fire and creating scenes of panic.

The hospital is supported by the government, and patients pay little or nothing, even for major surgeries.

Buhari Swears In Special Advisers, Permanent Secretary

President Muhammadu Buhari today administered oaths of office on four Special Advisers and a permanent secretary at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The event took place shortly before the commencement of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the chairmanship of the president.

The advisers are, Special Adviser on Economic Matters, Dr Adeyemi Dipeolu, Special Adviser on Political Matters, Mr Babafemi Ojudu, Special Adviser on Planning, Mr Tijani Abdullahi, and Special Adviser on Social Investment, Mrs Maryam Uwais.

The president also swore in Amb. Rafiu Enikanolaye, who was appointed Permanent Secretary in July and deployed to Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dipeolu, Ojudu and Uwais have been deployed to the Office of the Vice-President, while Abdullahi is with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

Nigeria’s Tennis Star Knocked Out Of Olympics

Aruna Quadri, Nigeria and African champion has crashed out of the Rio Olympics 2016 after suffering a 4-0 defeat to China’s star and world number one Ma Long, in the Men’s Singles category which took place earlier this morning.

Quadri became the first African to reach the quarterfinals of men’s singles event at the Olympic game. His wonderful journey in the singles tournament however came to an end with a dominant defeat (11-4, 11-2, 11-6, 11-7). Sorry Quadri.

Another Jailbreak! 15 Inmates Escape From Enugu Prison

At least 15 inmates have escaped in a jailbreak that occurred at Nsukka Prison in Enugu state. Quoting a source at the prison, NAN said the inmates broke their cells and scaled over the perimeter fence last night.

“The inmates carefully opened their cells and scaled the perimeter fence of the prisons. Before prison officials on night duty knew what was happening, about 15 inmates had escaped,”  source said.

Lawrence Okonkwo, controller of prison, confirmed the jailbreak but declined to give the number of inmates that escaped.

More Than 80% Of Nigerian Women Come Into Italy For Prostitution- UN

The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said that about 3,600 Nigerian women arrived Italy by boat in the first half of 2016, almost double the figure in the same period last year.

More than 80% of these women, it said, were trafficked into prostitution in Italy and across Europe. Traffickers use migrant reception centres as holding pens for women who are then collected and forced into prostitution, the UK Guardian quoted the UN agency as saying.

“What we have seen this year is a crisis, it is absolutely unprecedented and is the most significant increase in the number of Nigerian women arriving in Italy for 10 years,” said Simona Moscarelli, an anti-trafficking expert at the IOM.

Couple Married For 63 Years Die Minutes Apart

An elderly couple who were married for over 60 years died less than half an hour apart in the same room, and held hands with each other through their final minutes.

On 31 July Henry and Jeanette De Lange both died at a nursing home in Platte, South Dakota, after sharing 63 years of marriage and raising five children together.

Mrs De Lange, 87, died first after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for over five years, having moved into the home in 2011.

EFCC Releases Detained Blogger, Abubakar Sidiq

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has released political blogger, Mr. Abubakar Sidiq Usman who it earlier arrested.

His friends who have been soliciting for his release have also confirmed this.

The EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Monday had said the blogger was arrested “for offences bordering on cyber stalking”, adding that he had been offered administrative bail and would be released to his elected sureties.

Team Nigeria’s Chierika Ukogu has qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s Single Sculls Rowing event at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
