FG To Invest Yakubu, Diezani Loot To Fund Welfare Scheme For The Poor

The Federal Government is set to invest some of the recently recovered funds on its social intervention programmes.

A top government official told Sunday Punch on Saturday that the $9m recovered from a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Andrew Yakubu and the $153m forfeited by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, would be immediately used to fund the welfare scheme for the poor.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said the money would be used in paying the N30,000 monthly stipend to beneficiaries of the N-Power scheme, the job creation programme of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration; as well as the school feeding programme.

 A magistrate court in Osogbo, capital of Osun State today remanded a man Ayoola Kazeem in Ilesa prison for killing his mother in a village in the state.

Prosecutors told the court Ayoola killed his 85-year old mother, Taibat Ayoola on the 10th of February, 2016 in a village near Osu, the headquarter of Atakumosa West local government area of Osun state.

Ayoola had no legal counsel in court and his plea was not taken.

But when allowed to address the court, Ayoola said his mother was making life difficult for him and he was relieved after her death.

Acting President Osinbajo Signs Seven Bills Into Law

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has signed seven bills into law. Following Osinbajo’s assent to these bills, they have now become Acts of the National Assembly.

The Bills are Oaths (Amendment) Act, 2017; Defence Space Adminis- tration Act, 2017; Veterinary Surgeons (Amend-ment) Act, 2017; National Film and Video Censors Board (Amendment)Act, 2017; Pension Rights of Judges (Amendment) Act, 2017; Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (Establish-ment, etc.) Act, 2017; and Mortgage Institutions (Amendment)Act, 2016.

Sheriff Affirmation: Markafi Heads To Appeal Court, Fayose Says Sheriff Can’t Rule

The Sen. Ahmed Markafi-led, National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has said the party would appeal the Court of Appeal Judgement affirming Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman of the party.

Dayo Adeyeye, the National Publicity Secretary of the Committee, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Adeyeye described the judgement as a “big disappointment, travesty and miscarriage of justice,” and said the judgement would be appealed.

Meanwhile, the Governors Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party and the party’s Board of Trustees have said that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff can not lead the party.

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke was "made to feel like a criminal" as he was denied entry to the United States on Friday.

Yorke said he was prevented from entering the USA due to an Iranian stamp on his passport having represented the 'World Stars' in a charity match against 'Iranian Stars' in Tehran in 2015.

The 45-year-old enjoyed widespread success in English football, playing for Aston Villa, United, Blackburn, Birmingham and Sunderland before retiring in 2009.

BREAKING: Judge orders final forfeiture of N34 billion linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke

A federal court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of N23.4 billion, N9.08 billion, and $5 million (about N34 billion in total) linked to former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Justice Muslim Hassan, who had issued an interim forfeiture order on the funds on January 6, on Thursday gave a “final forfeiture order” on the funds.
The judge said he was satisfied with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s argument that the monies were proceeds of illegal activity.

Borno’s Gov. Attacks Predecessor, Sheriff, Over Boko Haram

The governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, has come down hard on his predecessor, Ali Sheriff, accusing him of inaction that he said led to the escalation of Boko Haram insurgency.

Mr. Shettima, who stated this on Monday at the annual lecture in honour of late Head of State, Murtala Mohammed in Abuja, said he was responding to a “political statement” by Mr. Sheriff in
which he said Boko Haram did not hold any territory in Borno when he handed over power.

The governor, who delivered a paper “Managing the Boko Haram crisis in Borno state, experiences and lessons for a multi party, multi ethnic and multi religious Nigeria”, said Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf, took advantage of Mr. Sheriff’s failure to provide leadership to declare a jihad.

Terrible! Former Deputy Governor Of CBN Says 20% Of Money Circulating Is Fake

Obadiah Mailafia, former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says 20 percent of the currency circulating in the country is fake. He said this at the national assembly on Monday, while delivering a lecture at the public hearing on the 2017 budget.

Mailafia said it would be impossible to bring down food prices with fake currency in circulation.

“Twenty percent of currency circulating in Nigeria is fake; you can’t bring down food prices if you have fake currency circulating,” he said.

Mailafia said apart from the foreign exchange crisis, the refusal of CBN to effectively regulate commercial banks contributed to the recession in the country.

NEMA Confirms 23 Killed, 58Injured In Kano-Zaria Truck Accident

At least 23 people were killed in an accident along Kano-Zaria road, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has said.

The agency said 58 people were also injured in the Friday accident involving a truck loaded with firewood.

Musa Ilallah, the North-West zonal coordinator of the agency, said on Sunday that he accident occurred after the truck’s tyre burst before it lost control and skidded into the bush.
Mr. Ilallah said some of the dead victims were killed by other speeding vehicles trying to escape the truck.

Trump Warns Iran President He 'Better Be Careful'

Donald Trump dialed up the rhetoric against Iran on Friday, warning the country's president he "better be careful" about his words.

The war-of-words between Tehran and Washington escalated as President Hassan Rouhani and Trump traded threats and warnings.

Rouhani told a crowd of hundreds of thousands marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that "the Iranian people must be spoken to with respect."

"Iranians will make those using threatening language against this nation regret it," he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he would only return to Nigeria when his London doctors certify him well enough to do so.

“… I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled out,” Mr. Buhari said in a February 5 letter to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, informing the National Assembly of the extension of his vacation.

Ibadan-based socialite, but ofcourse well known all over the country, Abiodun Femi Lekuti, popularly known as Danku Arewa is dead. A special operation conducted by operatives of the EFCC, on 3rd February, 2017, on a building belonging to a former Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Andrew Yakubu, in Kaduna yielded the recovery of a staggering sum of $9,772,800 and another sum of £74,000 cash. .

Nigerian Government Takes Over Arik Airlines

The Federal Government today took over Arik Airlines and announced the appointment of a new management in a bid to save the country’s aviation industry from total collapse.

Under the new arrangement, Roy Ilegbodu, a veteran aviation expert, has been named to take over the management of the airline under the receivership of Oluseye Opasanya, a senior advocate of Nigeria.

AMCON spokesperson, Jude Nwauzor, said the government’s decision to intervene clearly underscores a commitment to instill sanity in the country’ aviation sector to prevent a major catastrophe in the country.

“The development will afford Arik Airlines, which is the largest local carrier in the country, to go back to regular and undisrupted operations, avoid job losses, protect investors and stakeholder funds as well as ensure safety and stability in the already challenged aviation sector,” Mr. Nwauzor said.

Medical Vacation: Don’t Compare Buhari With Yar’Adua - FG

The federal government has rejected comparisons between the circumstances of medical vacation of President Muhammadu Buhari with that of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who died in office in 2010.

Minister of Information and Communication, Lai Mohammed, while briefing State House corespondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, recalled that while there was no handover of power from Yar’Adua to then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari has fulfilled the constitutional requirement of transferring power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The Nigeria Police Force today displayed a cash haul of N111 million it said was recovered from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who were arrested for allegedly receiving bribes to rig the December 10, 2016 Rivers State re-run election in the legislature.
The Police Investigative Panel led by a Commissioner of Police detailed how Governor Nyesom Wike gave a sum of N360 million as bribes to about 23 of the electoral officials, three of whom collected their share from the governor personally at the State Government House.

A boy has been shunned by society because of an acute skin disease which is slowly turning him into 'stone'.

Mehendi Hassan, eight, does not have tender hands like other young children his age. Instead, the youngster from Bangladesh is covered with painful scaly skin all over his body apart from his face.

His torso and limbs are covered in thick layers of skin that make it difficult for him to walk.

Little Mehendi struggles to wear clothes as even slightest of friction to his skin is excruciating and tragically stays at home all day because his appearance terrifies other children in the village.

Mum Who Spent 16 Days With Dead Baby Daughter Taking Her Body For Walks In Pram Shares Heartbreaking Photos

A mum who spent more than two weeks with her dead baby girl has shared heartbreaking photos from the experience as she took her daughter's body home and even for walks in a pram.

Brave Charlotte Szakacs, 21, and her husband Attila, 28, were given the devastating news their baby girl Evlyn had a debilitating chromosome abnormality after a 20-week scan in September 2016.

When Evlyn was born on December 13 at Leeds General Infirmary weighing 5lbs 5oz, she had an underdeveloped brain which was completely smooth, narrow airways in her nose and lungs and a narrow aorta.

And despite battling against the odds for four weeks, the tot passed away in her parents' arms on January 10.

Ambode Okays Death Penalty For Kidnappers, Signs Bill Into Law

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday signed into law the anti-kidnapping bill recently passed by the State House of Assembly, with a pledge to ensure its full implementation to eradicate kidnapping once and for all in the State.

The Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping Law imposes a penalty of life imprisonment on kidnapping for ransom. The law also stipulates that where a victim dies in the course of kidnap, the suspect is liable on conviction to death.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at Lagos House in Ikeja, Governor Ambode said the spate of kidnapping in the State had gotten to a level that required decisive action from government, hence the need for the enactment of the law to send serious message to perpetrators of such heinous crime.
