Many of the foreigners affected are migrants from neighboring African countries.
The recent violence is reported to have been spurred by comments made by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini that foreigners should “pack their bags” and leave.
Since then, King Zwelithini has claimed the media has distorted his words and he has called for the end to the unrest.
Many of the South Africans involved in this violence are blaming immigrants for taking away employment opportunities.
South African President, Jacob Zuma, has condemned the violence and established a high level team to help put an end to it.
It is worth remembering that President Zuma was hosted by African countries while he was in exile for anti-apartheid activities.
