Obiano, Sworn-In For Second Term In Office

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State and his Deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke have been sworn-in for second term in office. Obiano and Okeke accompanied by their wives were sworn-in by the Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi, at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

Addressing the people, Obiano said that the state was on another journey of remarkable achievements. The governor assured the people that his second tenure would witness improvement in the provision of infrastructure, entrepreneur and agriculture.

“As we have commenced another journey of four years, we will install CCTV cameras to further improve security across the major cities. We will dualize major roads in Nnewi and Onitsha and transform Awka to 21st century modern city,’’ he said.

Bauchi Senator Slumps & Dies In Abuja Home

Senator Ali Wakili (Bauchi South) has died. He slumped and died in his Gwarinpa Abuja residence yesterday.

He died of suspected heart attack. He was confirmed dead at a hospital he was rushed to for medical attention.

The lawmaker was one of the nine senators who vehemently opposed the controversial Electoral Act amendment 2018. He was 58.

Melaye Rejects Appeal Court Judgement Over Recall, Heads For Supreme Court

The senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has rejected the judgement of an Appeal Court on his recall process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Senator Melaye, who faulted the judgement on Friday hours after it was delivered, vowed to appeal the ruling in the Supreme Court.

Following series of legal tussles between the lawmaker and the electoral body, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal cleared the coast for INEC on Friday to continue with the recall process of Senator Melaye.

South Africa: Jacob Zuma Faces Corruption Trial

South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma is to face prosecution for 16 charges of corruption relating to a multi-billion-dollar arms deal.

The case centres on a 30bn rand ($2.5bn; £1.7bn) deal to modernise the country's defence in the late 1990s.

The charges - which Mr Zuma denies - include counts of fraud, racketeering and money laundering.

Mr Zuma, 75, was forced to resign as president last month by his party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Russia To Expel 23 UK Diplomats In Spy Row

Russia is to expel 23 British diplomats amid tensions over the nerve agent attack on a former spy and his daughter in the UK. The Russian foreign ministry said staff from the UK's Moscow embassy would be expelled within a week.

It also said it would close the British Council in Russia, which promotes cultural ties between the nations, and the British Consulate in St Petersburg. The move comes in response to Britain's decision to expel 23 Russian diplomats.

They were ordered to leave over the incident on 4 March which the UK government has blamed on Russia - but which Russia denies.

The UK Foreign Office said in a statement that it had "anticipated a response of this kind" from Russia and the National Security Council would meet early next week to consider its next steps.

Court Approves Melaye's Recall To Go On

According to Sahara Reporters, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has ruled that the recall process initiated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recall Senator Dino Melaye from the Nigerian Senate has to be restarted after it was initially paused when the Senator filed an appeal against a Federal High Court ordering the recall to go on.

In a  unanimous decision this earlier today, the court dismissed the appeal filed by Melaye against the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered last year.

The appellate struck out the suit filed at the court on the ground that there was no cause of action and the federal high that initially adjudicated the case lacked jurisdiction and ought not to have entertained the case in the first place.

800 APC Members Defect To PDP In Kwara

No fewer than 800 members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara have defected  to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Vanguard reports.

Mr  Iyiola Oyedepo, the  Chairman of the PDP  in the state, received the defectors in Ilorin  today during the visit of  executive members of the party in the North Central Zone.

Dr Hanafi Alabere, who led the defectors from  Alanamu Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area, said they were fed up with the APC.

Oyedepo, in his remarks,  told the visiting zonal executives that no notable member of the party had  defected to the APC since 2015. He described the defection of  Alabere and his  colleagues  as a pointer to the popularity of the PDP in the state.

The Nigerian government has written to the authorities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom and the United States of America after discovering hidden assets owned in the three countries by Nigerian Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

In the letters written to the UAE and USA, Mr. Fowler is relying on the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEoI), a multi-jurisdictional instrument for exposing hidden assets and incomes, to which Nigeria is a signatory. The AEoI, which kicked in Nigeria on January 1, was conceived to stop illicit financial flows.

Senate Condemns Bello, Police Over Attack On Kogi Senator

Pigs Kill Twins In Masaka, Nasarawa State

Residents of Jeun Makadi community in the Masaka area of Nasarawa State were shocked on Tuesday when they saw the corpses of newborn twin babies at a dump in the area.

It was learnt that the babies, who were suspected to have been dumped on Monday, were reportedly killed by wandering pigs.

When a Punch correspondent visited the area on Tuesday, one of the corpses was still at the dump. The baby was injured in the face. Residents said the other corpse had been carried away by the pigs.

Punch Metro learnt that some community leaders reported the incident to policemen from the Masaka division, who visited the dump.
