NUPENG Vows To Resist Proposed N5 Petrol Levy

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has criticised the proposed N5 petrol levy by the Senate, describing it as a huge joke.

Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, the South-West Chairman of NUPENG, said in Lagos on Saturday that the proposal was ill-timed and also smacked of insensitivity to the current economic hardships facing Nigerians.

He wondered how the nation’s Upper Chamber could think of another fuel price increase when Nigerians were “striving to cope with the current harsh economic realities”. “How can the Senate propose such a bill at this particular period when poor Nigerians can hardly feed themselves?

Musiliu Obanikoro's Mum Dies @ 95

Wasilat Obanikoro, mother of former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, is dead, her son said.

She was said to have been ill for a few weeks before passing on at her residence in Isale-Eko, Lagos.

The former petty trader would be buried at 3:00 p.m. at Ikoyi Cemetery, Lagos, in accordance with the dictates of Islam, which she practised until her demise, her son said. May God rest her soul.

Police Arrest 24-Year-Old Man On Suspicion Of Terror Offences Over Manchester Bombing

Police investigating the Manchester Arena terror attack have arrested a 24-year-old man, force bosses confirmed this morning. He was arrested in the Rusholme area of the city on suspicion of terrorism offences.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police this morning said: 'As it stands 17 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation, of which six people have since been released without charge.

'A total of 11 men remain in custody for questioning.'

14 Feared Killed, Six Abducted As Cultists Strike In Rivers

About 14 persons have allegedly been killed in Sime-Tai Community, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, following an invasion of the area on Thursday night by gunmen suspected to be cultists.

It was gathered that unknown gunmen invaded the community, shooting sporadically; a development that left many dead while several others had bullet wounds.

A source within the area, who confirmed the incident to Southern City News on telephone stated that the remains of the victims had been deposited in the mortuary.

The development, according to the source, has caused uneasy calm in the area as some people were seen, Friday, leaving for the neighbouring communities.

Era of kidnapping will soon be over- IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris has reassured Nigerians that the era of kidnapping will soon be over as police has equipped themselves with sophisticated intelligence units to track down criminals.

Idris gave the assurance yesterday while inaugurating the Imo Police Intelligence Unit which will coordinate tracking of criminals in the state.

Idris, who was on a familiarization visit to Imo, also inspected some police projects donated by Governor Rochas Okorocha. The IG said police had advanced to a sophisticated level in fighting crime, adding that it would be difficult for any criminal activity to be carried out in Imo and other states without the suspects being intercepted.

Plan To Recall Me From Senate Dead On Arrival – Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye on Friday described a protest staged in Lokoja, Kogi State, in favour of move to recall him from the upper legislative chamber as a non-issue.

He said the move allegedly being instigated by the state governor, Yahaya Bello, was dead on arrival.

The Kogi West senator,  in a text message to The Nation in Abuja, accused Governor Bello of going around media houses in the country to say “Dino Melaye recall process begins.”

Gideon Mshelbwala, the Director of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, raised the alert at a meeting with state Commissioners of
Agriculture in Abuja today.

Mr. Mshelbwala listed the states affected by the outbreak to include Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT and Kaduna, which reported a case on May 30. #PrayForNigeria.

The slain chairman of the Motorcycle Owners Association of Lagos State, Aro Rasaq Bello, popularly known as Hamburger has been buried today.

His wife and children flew in Wednesday night to be part of his burial. His family lives in Dubin, Ireland, but had to come and pay their last respect to him.

Protesters Strip N3ked As They Call For End To Violence Against Women [Photos]

Dozens of feminists stripped naked outside a president's palace as they held a screaming protest to call for an end to violence against women.

More than 100 protesters held the head-turning demonstration after they marched to a public square outside Argentinian President Mauricio Macri's residence.

After taking off their clothes in front stunned onlookers in Buenos Aires the group formed a pile of bodies and then screamed angrily en masse.

It was all part of a 'Femicide is Genocide' protest against gender-based violence, organised by a group called Artistic Force of Communicative Shock (FACC).

Senate Confirms 15 Electoral Commissioners

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of 15 persons, out 27 nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari, as Resident Electoral Commissioners.

Mr. Buhari had on March 23 requested the Senate to screen and confirm 27 nominees to assume responsibilities as RECs, who head the operations of the the Independent National Electoral Commission at state level.

But the Senate only confirmed 15 of the nominees today, following a recommendation by its INEC committee, led by Suleiman Nazif. While presenting the committee’s report, Mr. Nazif, APC-Bauchi, said the remaining 12 nominees were still undergoing screening.

Cameroon Catholic Bishop Commits Suicide

Rescue workers are searching for the body of a Catholic bishop in a river in Cameroon after he went missing two days ago.

The death of the Bishop of Bafia, Jean Marie Benoit Balla, has been confirmed by the Archbishop of Doula, Samuel Kleda, who is also the president of the Episcopal Council

Bishop Baila’s car has been found along the banks of River Sanaga. Some newspapers and social media sites are reporting that a suicide note was found in the car, but others are suggesting that he was murdered.

There have been a number of unsolved mysteries deaths of Catholic clergy in Cameroon. Archbishop Kleda has called for calm as the search for the bishop continues.

MKO Will Be Remembered In Ondo On June 12

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has set up a five-man committee ahead of the commemoration of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election which was won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The announcement was contained in a letter signed on behalf of the governor by Secretary to the State Government Ifedayo Abegunde and dispatched to the members of the committee in Akure.

Members of the committee are to resume action immediately and organize an anniversary symposium in commemoration for the day. Good to see him being celebrated again!
