Costa Concordia's 'Captain Coward' is jailed for 16 years over cruise ship disaster which left 32 people dead

Francesco Schettino, the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship when it crashed into rocks off Gigilo island, Italy, in 2012 killing 32 people, has been sentenced to 16 years in jail. Schettino, dubbed 'Captain Coward' after witnesses said he fled the stricken vessel before all 4,200 passengers were off safely, was convicted of multiple charges of manslaughter at a court in Grosseto today. However it is far from certain that he will see the inside of a jail cell, as he is entitled to two legal appeals that may take years to process.
